Morning & Evening Daily Devotional Reading– November 14

by Charles H. Spurgeon, Revised and Edited by William C. Neff

“I will cut off those who worship and swear by the Lord and by Malcham.”

–Zephaniah 1:5

Some of God’s people thought they were safe because they were aligned with the worship of Jehovah, and, at the same time, the so-called god, Malcham. But double-worship is abominable with God, and He hates hypocrisy. The idol worshipper who totally gives himself to his false god, commits one less sin than he who brings his polluted and detestable sacrifice to the temple of the Lord.

To fellowship with the rabbits and run with the hounds is a dangerous business. In the common matters of daily life a double-minded man is despised, but in religion he is loathsome to the last degree. The penalty pronounced in the verse just before this one is terrible, but well deserved; for how can divine justice spare the sinner who knows the right, approves of it, professes to follow it, and yet, all the while, lets evil rule his heart?

Search yourself today, and see whether you are guilty of double-dealing. Do you profess to be a follower of Jesus; do you truly love Him? Is your heart right with God? Are you in the Lord’s family, or in another? To have one foot on the land of truth and another on the sea of falsehood will bring you to total ruin. Christ will be ALL or NOTHING; if God reigns in my heart, there will be no space for another reigning power.

Is it my desire to live solely for God? If so, blessed be the mighty grace that has led me to salvation; and if not so, O Lord, forgive my terrible offense, and unite my heart to fear Your Name. [M&E]
