Morning & Evening Devotional Reading–

September 22– Morning

by C. H. Spurgeon, revised and edited by W. C. Neff

“Let Israel rejoice in her Maker.”

—Psalm 149:2

Be glad of heart, O believer, but take care that the source of your gladness is in the Lord. You have good reason to be glad in your God. You can sing with David, “God (is) my exceeding joy.”

Be glad that the Lord reigns– that Jehovah is King! Rejoice that he sits upon the throne and rules all things! Every attribute of God should become a fresh ray in the sunlight of our gladness. In our foolishness we should be glad that he is wise. In our weakness we should tremble with joy that he is mighty. When we stop to think that we will wither as the grass, we should rejoice that he lives forever. And though we change every hour, we rejoice that he is unchanging.

We should rejoice that his grace is given to us in covenant. This gladness in God is like a deep river. At first, we only touch its brink and know something of its clear, sweet, heavenly streams; but as we wade out further, it gets deeper and the current more impetuous in its joy.

The Christian feels that he may delight himself not only in what God is but also in what God has done in the past. The Psalms show us that God’s people in olden times were prone to think much of his actions and to produce a song for each of them. So let God’s people now rehearse the deeds of the Lord! Let them tell of his mighty acts and “sing unto the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously.”

And don’t ever stop singing, for as new mercies flow to you day by day, your gladness in the Lord’s loving providence and grace should be received in continued thanksgiving. Be glad, you children of Zion, and rejoice in the Lord your God. [M&E]
