Morning & Evening Devotional Reading–
October 3– Morning
by C. H. Spurgeon, revised and edited by W. C. Neff
“Aren’t they all ministering spirits, sent forth to serve those who will be heirs of salvation?”
—Hebrews 1:14
Angels are the unseen attendants of the saints of God. They bear us up in their hands to keep us from dashing our feet against a stone. Loyalty to their Lord leads them to take a deep interest in the children of his love. They rejoice over the return of the prodigal to his father’s house below, and they welcome the coming of the believer to the King’s palace above.
In times past the sons of God were favored with their visible appearance, and today, although unseen by us, heaven is still opened, and the angels of God ascend and descend upon the Son of man so that they may visit the heirs of salvation. Angels still fly with live coals from the altar to touch the lips of those whom God loves dearly. If our eyes could be opened, we should see horses of fire and chariots of fire all around the servants of the Lord, for we have come to an innumerable company of angels who are all watchers and protectors of the royal family.
What dignity is given to God’s chosen people when the brilliant attendants of heaven’s court become their willing servants! How much is our communion with God enhanced, knowing that we have interaction with these pure, celestial beings! How well are we defended since all the twenty-thousand chariots of God are armed for our deliverance!
And… to whom do we owe all this? Let the Lord Jesus Christ be forever endeared to us, for through him we are made to sit in heavenly places far above principalities and powers. It is the Lord who camps around those who fear him; he is the true Victor whose foot is upon Satan, the dragon. All hail, Jesus! Oh, Angel of Jehovah’s presence; to you we offer our morning vows.
