October 1– Evening

“[The Lord] will give grace and glory.'”
—Psalm 84:11
God is bountiful in his very nature; to give is his delight. His gifts are precious beyond measure and are as freely given as the light of the sun. He gives grace to his chosen ones because he wills it. He gives to those whom he has purchased for himself because of his covenant. He gives to believers because they seek it and to sinners because they need it. He gives grace abundantly, seasonably, constantly, readily, and sovereignly. He doubles the value of whatever he gives by the manner in which he gives it.
And not only has he given grace in the past, but he will always give it, generously pouring into the souls of his people without ceasing, no matter what comes their way. Sickness may occur, but the Lord will give grace; poverty may come, but grace will surely be afforded; death must come, but grace will light a candle at the darkest hour. Dear reader, how blessed it is, as years roll round and the leaves begin again to fall, to enjoy such an unfading promise as this: “The Lord will give grace.”
And notice the conjunction “and”: God will give his people grace and glory. This is a diamond rivet binding the present with the future; grace and glory always go together. The Lord will never deny a soul glory to whom he has freely given his grace; indeed, glory is nothing more than grace in its Sabbath dress, grace in full bloom, grace like autumn fruit, mellow and perfected.
No one knows how soon we will obtain this glory. It may be before this month of October has run out that we will see the Holy City! But whether the interval is longer or shorter, we will be glorified before long. Glory, the glory of heaven, the glory of eternity, the glory of Jesus, the glory of the Father, the Lord will surely give to his chosen. Oh, what an extraordinary promise of a faithful God! [M&E]
