“This is the blood of the Covenant which God has commanded for you.”
—Hebrews 9:20
There is a strange power about the very word “blood,” and the sight of it always causes us to take notice. A kind heart cannot bear to see a sparrow bleed, and unless one become familiar with it by use, the average person turns away with horror at the sight of an animal being slaughtered.
The blood of men is something to be especially consecrated. It is murder to shed it in wrath. It is a dreadful crime to squander it in war. Is this solemnity caused by the fact that blood is life and the pouring out of it is the token of death? I think so.
When we rise to contemplate the blood of the very Son of God, our awe is even more increased. We shudder as we think of the guilt of sin and the terrible penalty the Sin-bearer endured. Blood, always precious, is priceless when it streams from Immanuel’s side. The blood of Jesus seals the covenant of grace and makes it sure forever. Covenants of old were made by sacrifice, and the everlasting covenant was ratified in the same manner. The blood of Jesus made his will and testament valid. A will has no power unless the testator dies. In this light the soldier’s spear is a blessed aid to our faith, since it proved our Lord to be really dead. There can be no doubt about it, and we may boldly appropriate the benefits which he has designated for his people.
Happy are those who see their title to heavenly blessings assured to them by a dying Savior. Does the Savior’s blood speak to you in this way? Does it not call us to set ourselves apart unto the one by whom we have been redeemed? Does it not call us to newness of life and incite us to entire consecration to the Lord? O that the power of the blood might be known and felt in us tonight! [M&E]
