“I will be their God, and they will be my people.” 

—2 Corinthians 6:16

 

What a sweet title we find in the words, “My people,” and what a cheerful revelation we have in the words, “their God!”

The term, “My people,” expresses a special relationship. After all, the whole world is God’s; the heaven, even the heaven of heavens, is the Lord’s, and he reigns over all people. But of those whom he has chosen and purchased for himself he says what cannot be said of others, and he calls them, “My people.” They are especially his; he has done more for them than for others; he has bought them with his blood; he has brought them near to himself; he has set his great heart upon them; he has loved them with an everlasting love.

Dear friend, can you, by faith, see yourself in that number? Can you look up to heaven and say, “My Lord, my God, my Father”? Do you delight to know God and to fellowship with him through his Word? And are you pleased that he reveals himself to you in a way that the world knows nothing of? Can you read the Book of Inspiration and find there the privileges of your salvation? Can you read your name written in precious blood? Can you hold the garments of Jesus and say, these belong to “My Christ?” If you can, then God says of you and of others like you, “My people;” for, if God is your God and Christ is your Christ, the Lord favors you in a special and peculiar way; you are the object of his choice, accepted in his beloved Son. [M&E]
