Morning & Evening Devotional Reading–

May 31– Evening

by C. H. Spurgeon, revised and edited by W. C. Neff

“He heals all your diseases.”

—Psalm 103:3

Humbling as this statement is, the fact remains that we are all suffering under the disease of sin. What a comfort to know that we have a great Physician who is both able and willing to heal us! Let us think of him awhile tonight. His cures are very speedy; life comes to us by merely looking at him. His cures are radical; he strikes at the heart of the disease. Because of this, his cures are sure and certain. His cures never fail, and the diseases never return. There is no relapse where Christ heals; he doesn’t just patch up his patients for a season, but he makes new men of them. He gives them a new heart and a right spirit to go with it.

He is well skilled in all diseases. Physicians generally have some specialty. They know a lot about one disease but only generally about most others. But Jesus Christ is thoroughly acquainted with the whole of human nature. He is as much at home with one sinner as with another, and he never comes across a strange case that is too difficult for him. He has seen his share of extraordinary and strange diseases, but he has known exactly how to treat the patient. He is the only universal doctor, and the medicine he gives is the only true panacea, healing every patient in every instance.

Whatever our spiritual sickness may be, we should apply at once to this Divine Physician. There is no brokenness of heart which Jesus cannot bind up. “His blood cleanses from all sin.” We have only to think of the multitudes who have been delivered from all sorts of diseases through the power and virtue of  his touch, and we will joyfully put ourselves in his hands. We trust him, and sin dies; we love him, and grace lives; we wait for him and grace becomes stronger; we see him as he is, and grace is perfected forever. [M&E]
