May 20– Morning

“Marvelous loving-kindness.” 

—Psalm 17:7

 

When we give our hearts with our alms, we give well, but we must often admit failure in this respect. Not so with God. His favors are always performed with the love of his heart. He does not send to us the cold meat and the broken crumbs from his table, but he feeds us from his own dish and seasons our food with the spices of his fragrant affections. When he puts the golden coins of his grace into our palms, he accompanies the gift with such a warm embrace that the manner of his giving is as precious as the gift itself. When he comes into our houses on an errand of kindness, he will not act as some austere visitors do in a poor man’s cottage. No! He sits by our side, not despising our poverty, nor blaming our weakness. And he always speaks with a smile, uttering gracious words and embraces of affection.

It is impossible to doubt the sincerity of his charity. He gives liberally and withholds nothing good from us. There is not even a hint that we are burdensome to him– not one cold look for his poor dependents. He is glad to be merciful, and he draws us close to his side while he pours out his abundance for us.

There is a fragrance in his cologne that nothing but his heart could produce. There is a sweetness in his honeycomb which could not be there unless the very essence of his soul’s affection had produced it. Oh! How rare it is to be loved by One like this. May we continually taste and know the blessedness of it! [M&E]
