“He gives us richly all things to enjoy.”
—1 Timothy 6:17
Our Lord Jesus is always giving and does not for a single instant withdraw his hand from doing so. As long as there is a cup of grace that has not yet been filled to the brim, he will not withhold the oil. He is a sun ever shining; he is manna always falling around the camp; he is a rock in the desert ever sending out streams of life from his smitten side; the rain of his grace is always dropping; the river of his bounty is ever flowing, and the wellspring of his love is constantly gushing forth. As the King can never die, so his grace can never fail. Daily we pluck his fruit, and daily his branches bend down to our hand with a fresh store of mercy.
With the Lord, every day is a day of feasting. Who has ever returned from one of his banquets hungry? Who has returned from his company unembraced? His mercies are new every morning and fresh every evening. Who can know the number of his benefits or recount the list of his bounties? The river of time carries from the mountains of eternity the sparkling water of his favor.
Who can count the many benefits he has given to Jacob or tell the number of mercies he has given to Israel? How will I praise him enough for his many benefits and acts of loving-kindness. If only my praise were as ceaseless as his bounty! O miserable tongue, how can you remain silent? Wake up before you totally embarrass me. He is the Lord, and it is time to sing his praise! [M&E]
