Morning & Evening Devotional Reading–

March 4– Morning

by C. H. Spurgeon, revised and edited by W. C. Neff

“My grace is sufficient for you.”

—2 Corinthians 12:9

If none of God’s saints were poor and tried, we would not know very much about God’s comforting grace. When the traveler with no place to stay still trusts in the Lord; when the pauper starving on bread and water still glories in Jesus; when the grieving widow faithfully holds onto Christ, how much honor this reflects on the gospel.

God’s grace is illustrated and magnified in the poverty and trials of believers. Saints bear up under every discouragement, believing that all things work together for their good. They trust that God will either deliver them speedily or that He will support them in the trouble as long as it lasts. This patience of the saints proves the power of divine grace.

A lighthouse observed on a calm, clear night may be strong, but one observed on a stormy night is proven to be strong. And so it is with the Spirit’s work. If we were not surrounded often with tempestuous waves, we would not know that he was true and strong for us. The most masterful works of God are those men and women who stand firm in the middle of difficulties.

Anyone who desires to glorify God must prepare to encounter many trials. No man can truly shine before the Lord without them; so, if your pathway is rocky, rejoice! God will use it to show forth his all-sufficient grace. The very thought that he would ever fail you should be thoroughly hated. The God who has been sufficient until now should be trusted to the end. [M&E]
