“The love of Christ that surpasses all comprehension.”
—Ephesians 3:19
The love of Christ in its sweetness, fullness, greatness, and faithfulness, surpasses all possible human comprehension. Where can we find adequate words to describe his matchless, unparalleled love towards the children of men? It is so vast and boundless that, like a bird that skims across the water without diving into its depths, so all descriptive words only touch the surface.
Before we can even attempt to understand his love, we must know something of his previous glory in the heights of Heaven and his becoming man upon this earth in all its depths of shame. But who can tell us about the majesty of Christ? When he was enthroned in the highest heavens, he was very God of very God. By him the Heavens were made. His own almighty arm upheld all the stars and planets. The praises of angels perpetually surrounded him. He reigned supreme above all his creatures, God over all, blessed forever. Who has any idea of the height of this glory?
And who, on the other hand, can tell how low he descended when he became a man— and, more than that, a man of suffering. To bleed, and die, and suffer– these were much for him who was the Son of God. But to suffer such unparalleled agony– to endure a death of shame and desertion by his Father– this is a depth of condescending love which even the most inspired mind utterly fails to fathom. This is love! And truly it is love that “surpasses knowledge.”
O let this love fill our hearts with adoring gratitude and lead us to demonstrate its power today. [M&E]
