“Yes, Lord! But even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.”
—Matthew 15:27
This woman gained comfort in her misery by thinking great thoughts of Christ. The Master had talked about the children’s bread: “So,” she argued, “since you are the Master of the table of grace, I know that you are a generous keeper of the house, and there is sure to be an abundance of bread on your table. As the children eat from that abundance, there will be crumbs that fall to the floor. If the dogs eat those crumbs, the children will lose nothing.”
The woman thought the Master’s food was so rich that all she needed from it was a mere crumb. Yet remember: she came to Jesus to ask him to cast out a demon from her daughter which was a very great thing to her. Her high esteem of Christ caused her to think, “I am only asking him for a crumb, which is easy for him to give.”
This is the royal road to comfort. Great thoughts of your sin alone will drive you to despair, but great thoughts of Christ will escort you into the sanctuary of peace. “My sins are many,” you say! Yes, but it is nothing to Jesus to take them all away. You think, “The weight of my guilt presses down on me as a giant’s foot would crush a worm!” But it is no more than a grain of dust to Jesus because he has already born its curse in his own body on the cross. It is a small thing for him but an infinite blessing for me.”
The woman opens her soul’s mouth very wide, expecting great things of Jesus, and he fills it with his love. Dear reader, do the same. She confessed that Christ told her the truth, but she embraced that truth so much that she discovered arguments for her case in his own words. She knew who he was and believed great things of him. This is how she was successful. And if we wish to conquer like her, we must imitate her tactics. [M&E]
