“The Son of man.”
—John 3:13
How constantly our Master used the title the “Son of man!” If he had chosen, he might always have spoken of himself as the Son of God, the Everlasting Father, the Wonderful, the Counselor, the Prince of Peace. But observe the lowliness of Jesus! He prefers to call himself the Son of man.
From this example, let us learn a lesson of humility from our Savior. Certainly, we should never seek great titles for ourselves or to be known by proud degrees. But here there is a far sweeter thought. Jesus loved mankind so much that he delighted to honor it. It is a high honor and, indeed, the greatest dignity of manhood, that Jesus is the Son of man. By using that title, it’s as if he wanted to hang royal stars upon the breast of manhood and show forth the love of God to Abraham’s seed. The Son of man put a halo on the head of Adam’s children.
Yet there is perhaps an even more precious thought. Jesus Christ called himself the Son of man to express his oneness and sympathy with his people. This is how he reminds us that he is the one whom we may approach without fear. As a man, we may take to him all our griefs and troubles, for he knows them by experience. He himself has suffered as the “Son of man.” He is able to aid and comfort us.
All hail, blessed Jesus! You have chosen to wear for eternity the name which acknowledges that you are our brother and close relative, and it is a dear token of your grace, humility, and love.
“Oh see how Jesus gives himself to receive our childish love,
And freely works within our hearts our earnestness to prove!
His sacred name a common word on earth he loves to hear;
His majesty is wrapped in love so his dear ones may come near.” [M&E]
