“[Jesus] humbled himself.”
—Philippians 2:8
Jesus is the great teacher of humility. And we need to learn from him every day. Observe the Master taking a towel and washing his disciples’ feet! Follower of Christ, will you not humble yourself in this way? See him as the Servant of servants, and surely you cannot remain proud!
“He humbled himself!” Isn’t that the essence of his biography? Didn’t he come to earth and strip himself of one robe of honor followed by another and then another until he was naked and fastened to the cross. And on that cross, didn’t he empty out himself, pouring out his lifeblood, giving until they laid him penniless and lifeless in a borrowed grave? How low was our dear Redeemer brought! How then can we be proud?
Stand at the foot of the cross today and count the purple drops by which you have been cleansed. See the crown of thorns he wore. Mark his scourged shoulders, still gushing with crimson streams. See hands and feet penetrated by the rough iron. And all this while receiving mockery and scorn. Hear him shriek, “My God, my God, why have you turned away from me?” After all of that, if you do not lie prostrate on the ground before that cross, then you have never seen it. If you are not humbled in the presence of Jesus, then you do not know him.
Looking at Christ’s amazing love humbles us even more than considering the depth of our own sin. So, come to Calvary today and look at Jesus. See him on the cross. If we do, then our position will no longer be that of the pompous man or woman of pride, but we shall take the humble place of one who loves much because much has been forgiven. Pride cannot live beneath the cross. So, let us sit there, look intently at our Savior, and learn our lesson. And then let us rise and live differently. [M&E]
