“Lord, help!” 

—Psalm 12:1

This prayer is remarkable not only because it is very short but because it is also timely, earnest, and informative. David had been mourning the rarity of faithful men, and, by doing so, he lifted up his heart to the Lord. When the creature failed, he flew to the Creator. He evidently felt his own weakness, or he would not have cried for help; but at the same time he intended honestly to take action; after all, the word “help” does not apply if we ourselves do nothing.

Notice also the directness and the clearness of perception we find in these two small words– much more than in the long ramblings of the “mere talkers.” The Psalmist runs straight forward to his God with a well-considered prayer. He knows what he is seeking and where to seek it. Lord, teach us to pray in the same blessed manner.

This is the kind of prayer that can be prayed frequently, isn’t it? When we experience those difficult times of affliction there is usually a shortage of helpers. Students in doctrinal difficulties can ask for the Holy Spirit’s help. Those who face spiritual conflicts can send for reinforcements. Those who are growing weary in their work can obtain grace in time of need. It is the prayer for all times and places, “Lord, help!” Let us not be slow to cry out to him.

Lastly, the answer to the prayer is certain, if it is sincerely offered through Jesus Christ. The Lord’s character assures us that he will not leave his people. His gift of Jesus is a pledge of every good thing, and his sure promise stands: “Do not be afraid, for I will help you.” [M&E]
