“Trust in the Lord forever, for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength.”
—Isaiah 26:4
Since God is worthy to be trusted, let us rest upon him with all our weight! Let us resolutely drive out all unbelief, and endeavor to get rid of doubts and fears which harm our rest in Him. There is no excuse for fear where God is the foundation of our trust. A loving parent would be sorely grieved if his child could not trust him; and how ungenerous, how unkind is our conduct when we put so little confidence in our heavenly Father who has never failed us and who never will. It would be good if doubting were banished from the household of God.
Unbelief is prevalent in our day. We might ask like the Psalmist, “Has God’s mercy disappeared forever? Has His favor ceased to exist?” How soon faith can turn to doubt. But just as David saw the mighty sword of Goliath and said immediately, “There is none like it”; so we too should look upon our God and speak well of him. There is none like him in the heaven above or in the earth beneath. God himself asks, “To whom then will you compare me; who will be my equal?
There is no rock like the Rock of Jacob; even our enemies know this. So far from allowing doubts to live in our hearts, we should take the whole detestable crew, as Elijah did the prophets of Baal, and slay them at the brook. The stream of blood and water which flows from our Savior’s side will be the place where we put the enemies of God to death. We have been in many trials, but we have never yet been thrown into a place where we could not find in our God all that we needed. Let us then be encouraged to trust in the Lord forever, assured that his everlasting strength will be, as it has been, our comfort and resting place. [M&E]
