“[Jesus] went about doing good.”
—Acts 10:38
This statement is very short—just a few words—but it provides us with an exquisite summary of the Lord Jesus Christ. Some art work has only a few touches, but they are the strokes of a master’s pencil. In what ways did our Savior “go about doing good?”
It is evident that he did good personally. The gospel writers constantly tell us that he touched the leper with his own finger and anointed the eyes of the blind. There were cases where he was asked to speak the word only at a distance, he did not usually comply; instead, he went himself to the sick bed and there personally administered the cure. This should be a lesson for us that, if we wish to do good, we must do it personally. When possible, we should give alms with your own hand; a kind look or word enhances the gift’s value. Speak personally with a friend about his soul; your loving appeal will have more influence than a whole library of books.
We also notice that our Lord did good with incessant activity! He was always at it. He not only did the good which was close at hand, but he “went about” on his errands of mercy. There was scarcely a village or hamlet in all of Judea that was not gladdened by the sight of his coming. How this reproves the creeping, loitering manner, in which many professing Christians serve the Lord. Let us gird up the loins of our mind and not become weary in well doing.
This text also implies that Jesus Christ went out of his way to do good? He was never deterred by danger or difficulty. He sought out the objects of his gracious intentions, and so must we. If old plans will not accomplish the goal, then we must try new ones.
Jesus went about doing good, and “He has left us an example that we should follow in his steps.” [M&E]
