“I will give you as a covenant of the people.”
—Isaiah 49:8
Jesus Christ himself is the substance of the covenant, and, as one of its gifts, he is the property of every believer. If you believe in Christ, can you fathom all that you have in him? “In Christ lives all the fullness of Deity in bodily form.” Therefore, consider all that God is in his infinite attributes and all that “perfect man” is in his beauty, for all that Christ ever had or can have, as God and man, is yours because of his covenant with God.
Our blessed Jesus is God: all-knowing, everywhere-present, and all-powerful. Doesn’t it console you to know that all these great and glorious attributes are yours? Does he have power? That power is yours to support and strengthen you to the end. Does he have love? Well, there is not a drop of love in his heart that isn’t yours. Does he have justice? Then, he will by his justice see to it that everything promised to you in the covenant of grace will be secured for you.
And think of all he has in his human perfection, and know that this is also yours. As a perfect man, he was accepted by God the Father. O believer, God’s acceptance of Christ is your acceptance; for don’t you know that the love which the Father set on a perfect Christ, he sets on you now? All that Christ has done in keeping with God’s honorable law is yours, and that righteousness has been credited to your account. You have Christ, and he is the keeper of the covenant with God. [M&E]
