“Your heavenly Father.” 

—Matthew 6:26

 

God’s people are doubly his children. First, in a general sense, they are his offspring by creation; and, then, in a special sense, they are his sons by adoption in Christ. This is why they are privileged to call him, “Our Father in Heaven.”

The title, “Father,” is a precious one. It is first a title of authority; a father is to be honored, and his sons are to obey him. But this authority is mingled with affection. It’s an authority that doesn’t provoke rebellion. It demands an obedience that is cheerfully rendered. God’s children must obey him with love. Don’t go about the service of God as a slave to his taskmaster but as a loving son to your Father.

The word “Father” is a kingly attribute so sweetly veiled in love that the King’s crown is forgotten in the King’s face. His scepter, which is a rod of iron to the wicked, is a silver scepter of mercy to his sons.

In the word “Father”, there is honor and love. How great is a Father’s love to his children! Friendship has its limits, and mere benevolence can only go so far, but a father’s heart and hand can’t do enough for his sons. They are his children, so he must bless them and show himself strong in their defense.

If an earthly father watches over his children with unceasing love and care, how much more does our heavenly Father? There is heaven in the depth of that word– Father! There is all I can ask– all my necessities can demand, all my wishes can desire. I have all I need for eternity when I can say, “Father.” [M&E]
