“Mighty to Save.”
—Isaiah 63:1
God is able to save— from his first, holy desire to provide salvation, until the completion of that salvation in the holy life of the Christian. Christ is not only mighty to save those who repent, but he is able to bring men to repentance. Not only will he carry those to heaven who believe in him, but he is mighty enough to give men new hearts to believe. His power is enough to make the man who hates holiness love it and to cause the one who despises his name to bow the knee in submission before him.
And this is just the beginning! For God’s power is equally seen in the work he does after a man is born anew. The life of a believer is a series of miracles performed by “the Mighty God.” He doesn’t make a believer and then leave him to find his own way, but he completes the work he began. He imparts the first germ of life in the dead soul, causes him to grow in the Holy Spirit, empowers him to break every bond of sin, raises his soul from the earth, and perfects him in glory.
Believer, here is encouragement for you. Are you praying for a loved one today? Don’t give up! For Christ is “mighty to save.” Although you are powerless to reclaim the rebel, your Lord is Almighty. Take hold of his mighty arm, and ask him to work on your behalf. Does your own situation trouble you? Don’t be afraid, for his strength is sufficient for you. Whether he works with others or carries on his work in you, Jesus is “mighty to save.” [M&E]
