“The Lord says to his people, ‘I will cause the shower to come down in its season, and there will be showers of blessing.'” 

—Ezekiel 34:26

 

Here is an expression of sovereign mercy, for who can say “I will give them showers” but God himself? There is only one voice that can speak to the clouds and tell them to start raining. Who sends down the rain upon the earth? Who scatters the showers upon the green grass? Is it not the Lord God alone? So grace is the gift of God and cannot be produced by man. This grace, then, is very much needed in our lives. What would the ground do without showers? You may break up the clods of dirt; you can plant your seeds; but what can you do without the rain? In the same way, we need God’s blessing in our lives. Unless God gives the showers of rain, your labor will produce nothing.

Thankfully, God’s grace is given in good supply. God does not say “I will send them drops” but “showers.” It is the same way with grace. If God gives a blessing, he usually gives it in such a measure that there is not enough room to receive it.

Dear Christian, since God’s grace comes in its season, let me ask you: What is your season this morning? Is it the season of drought? Then that is the season for showers. Is it a season of great heaviness and black clouds? Then that is the season for showers. If he gives converting grace, he will also give comforting grace. He will send “showers of blessing.” Look up today, O parched plant, and open your leaves and flowers for a heavenly watering. [M&E]
