Morning & Evening Devotional Reading–

February 14– Morning

by C. H. Spurgeon, revised and edited by W. C. Neff

“A continual allowance, a daily rate for every day, all the days of his life.”

—2 Kings 25:30

Jehoiachin was not sent away from the king’s palace with a lump of money to last him for months or years, but his provision was given to him as a daily pension. This provides a great picture of the happy position of all God’s people.

A daily portion is all that a man really needs, anyway. We do not need tomorrow’s supplies; it hasn’t yet come. The thirst we may suffer in the month of June, for instance, does not need to be quenched in February; we don’t need it yet! We can only eat that day’s food and wear that day’s clothing; in fact, having surplus gives us the extra worry of storing it properly and the anxiety of guarding it from being stolen. One staff can be helpful to a walking traveler, but a bundle of staves is a heavy and unnecessary burden. Having enough is not only as good as a feast, but it is all that even the biggest glutton can truly enjoy.

Furthermore, enough is all that we should expect; to crave for more is to be ungrateful. And when our Father does not give us more, we should be content with his daily allowance.

Finally, do not forget that in matters of grace you need a daily supply. You cannot store up your strength; every day you must seek help from above. As you are in the Word, engaged in ministry, meditation, and prayer– waiting upon God– you will receive renewed strength. In Jesus everything you need is reserved for you.  Enjoy your continual allowance, and never go hungry while the daily bread of grace is on the table of mercy. [M&E]
