Morning & Evening Devotional Reading–

December 8– Evening

by C. H. Spurgeon, revised and edited by W. C. Neff

“You, O God, in your goodness, have provided for the poor.'”

—Psalm 68:10

All God’s gifts are prepared gifts and are waiting in storage for needs he foresees. He anticipates our needs and, out of the fulness of treasures found in Christ Jesus, he provides out of his goodness for the poor. You may trust him for all the needs which present themselves, for he has infallibly foreknown every one of them. He can say of us in all conditions, “I knew that you would need this or that.”

When a man goes on a journey across the desert, he may pitch his tent after travelling a long day and discover that he needs many things he hasn’t brought with him. He says to himself, “Ah, I didn’t think about that; if I go on this journey again, I’ll remember to bring these things with me which are necessary to my comfort.” But God has marked with a pre-knowing eye all the requirements of his poor wandering children, and when those needs occur, supplies are ready.

It is goodness which he has prepared for the poor in heart— goodness and goodness only. God says to us, “My grace is sufficient for you.” “As your daily needs are, so will your strength be.”

Dear Reader, is your heart heavy this evening? God knew it would be. The comfort your heart wants is treasured in the sweet assurance of this text. You are poor and needy, but he knows that about you and has prepared the exact blessing you need. Plead the promise; believe it, and obtain its fulfilment. Are you consciously aware of your sinfulness as never before? Look to the crimson fountain; it is still flowing with all its effectiveness to wash your sin away!

You will never come into such a position that Christ cannot help you. No pinch will ever arrive in your spiritual affairs in which Jesus Christ will not be equal to the emergency, for your history has all been foreknown and provided for in Jesus. [M&E]
