Morning & Evening Devotional Reading–
December 6– Morning
by C. H. Spurgeon, revised and edited by W. C. Neff
“As is the heavenly, so also are those that are heavenly.”
—I Corinthians 15:48
Both the head and the members of any body share the same nature. This is certainly true of Christ and his mystical body, the Church. Its members were mortal, and, therefore, Jesus came to die for them; Christ is immortal, and, therefore, the members of his body will never die. Jesus says to those who belong to him, “Because I live, you will live also.” He is the chosen Head, and they are chosen, too. Christ is acceptable to God, and every member in him is also acceptable.
In this way there is a double union of nature which provides a basis for the closest communion. Pause here for a moment, and be amazed by this. Think of the infinite condescension of the Son of God– that he has stooped into your wretchedness to exalt you into blessed union with him. Without him, in your own mortality, corruption is your father, and the worm is your sister. And yet, in Christ, you are so honored that you can now call the Almighty your “Daddy” and the Incarnate Son of God your “Brother” and your “Husband.”
If being related to the right family is a reason to think highly of oneself, then we have more reason than any to boast. Even the poorest and most despised believer ought to lay hold of this privilege. Don’t let a senseless laziness cause you to ignore your noble ancestry. And don’t let a foolish attachment to passing vanities occupy your thoughts so as to make you forget about the glorious honor of being united to Jesus Christ. [M&E]
