“The Lord will guide you continually.”
—Isaiah 58:11
The Lord himself will guide you— not merely an angel but Jehovah himself. Yes, God said an angel would go before them to lead the way, but later Moses said, “If your presence, [O God], does not go with me, then don’t take us there.”
Dear Christian, God has not left you in your earthly pilgrimage to be guided by a mere angel; he himself leads his people. You may not have a pillar of fire to follow, but Jehovah himself will never forsake you. Notice the word “will”— The Lord “will” guide you. How certain this makes it! How sure it is that God will not forsake us! God’s simple promise that he “will” do something is better than the most solemn oaths of men.
And notice that the Lord will guide us “continually.” We are not merely to be guided sometimes, but he will monitor every step. He will not leave us even occasionally to wander in our own understanding, but we will “continually” hear the guiding voice of the Great Shepherd. If we follow close at his heels, we will not be misdirected but will be led down the right pathway toward a city where we can live and flourish. No matter what happens along the way— if your position in life changes; if you travel to foreign countries; if you are cast into poverty or are lifted to a position of great responsibility; if you are thrown among strangers or cast among enemies, you have no need to fear, for “the Lord will guide you continually.”
If you live near to God and your heart is kept warm with holy love, you will never get lost. He who travels with God as his companion goes in the right direction. Like Enoch, walk with God, and your pathway will never be the wrong one. You have infallible wisdom to direct you, immutable love to comfort you, and eternal power to defend you. “Jehovah himself will guide you continually.” [M&E]27
