“He (God) has made with me an everlasting covenant.” 

—2 Samuel 23:5

When we consider this covenant, we must remember that it is first and foremost divine in its origin. Oh that great word “He” (with a capital H)! Stop for a moment, and consider that God, the everlasting Father, has made a covenant with you in Christ. Yes, that God who spoke the world into existence by a word, stooping from his majesty, takes hold of your hand, and makes a covenant with you. If we grasped the great condescension of this, it would ravish our hearts forever. He is not merely a king— but the King of the kings, El Shaddai, the Lord All-sufficient, the Jehovah of ages, the everlasting Elohim, “HE has made with me an everlasting covenant.”

But notice the personal application; that is, he has made an everlasting covenant WITH ME.” It’s wonderful to know that he made a covenant of peace for the world; but I want to know that he has made peace for me– that he has made a covenant with ME. If the Holy Spirit gives me assurance of this, then his salvation is mine, his heart is mine, he himself is mine– he is my God.

Finally, notice that this covenant is everlasting in its duration. It has no beginning and no end. How sweet amid all the uncertainties of life to know that “the foundation of the Lord stands sure.” God himself promises, “I will not break my covenant; it has come out of my lips.” God has sworn upon himself to keep his covenant with me– forever. [M&E]
