Morning & Evening Devotional Reading–
August 9– Morning
by C. H. Spurgeon, revised and edited by W. C. Neff
“The City has no need of sun or moon to shine in it.”
—Revelation 21:23
Those who live in Heaven are free of all creature comforts. They have no need of extra clothing; their white robes never wear out and never will become dirty. They need no medicine to heal diseases. They need no sleep to refresh their bodies but continually praise God day and night without getting tired. They need no social relationship to bring them comfort; knowing God is more than enough. They need no teachers; they commune around the things of God, but they are all taught by the Lord himself.
In this life, we receive alms at the king’s gate, but there they feast at the King’s table. Here we lean upon friendly arms, but there they lean upon the Lord himself and him alone. Here we look to the food that spoils and to the clothing that wears thin, but there they find everything in God. Here we use a bucket to fetch water from the well, but there they drink from the fountain head and put their lips down to the living water. Here the angels bring us love-notes from God, but there we will see him face to face.
What a blessed day that will be when we will have climbed the mountain above and spend every second resting upon the bare arm of God! What a glorious hour when God, and not his creatures– the Lord, and not his works– will be our daily joy! [M&E]
