Morning & Evening Devotional Reading–

August 24– Morning

by C. H. Spurgeon, revised and edited by W. C. Neff

“He will break through the gate before them.”

Because Jesus has gone before us, nothing remains as it would have been if he had never passed that way. He has conquered every enemy that obstructed the way. If you are weary in the fight, cheer up. Not only has Christ traveled the road before you, but he has destroyed your enemies.

Do you dread sin? He has nailed it to his cross. Do you fear death? He has been the death of Death. Are you afraid of hell? He prohibits it from coming to any of his children; they will never see it. Whatever enemies are encountered by the Christian, they have all been overcome. There are lions, but their teeth are broken; there are serpents, but their fangs are extracted; there are rivers, but they are bridged and passable; there are flames, but we wear fire-resistant clothing. The sword that has been forged against us is already blunted; the weapons of the enemy have already lost their point. God, in Christ, has taken away all the power of every hurtful thing, so the army may safely march onward, and you may go joyously along your journey. There is nothing left to do but to march on to seize the plunder. The enemies are defeated; all you have to do is divide the spoil.

You will, of course, continue to engage in combat, but your fight is with a vanquished foe. His head is broken; he may attempt to injure you, but his strength is not sufficient to carry out his malicious plans. Your victory will be easy, and you will be unable to count all the treasure. [M&E]
