“The Lord is King forever and ever.”
—Psalm 10:16
Jesus Christ didn’t decide by himself to be the king of all, but he is really and truly the Lord’s anointed! “It pleased the Father that in Christ all his fulness should dwell.” God has given to him all power and all authority. As the Son of man, he is now head over all things to his church, and he reigns over heaven and earth and hell. He carries the keys of life and death on his belt.
Certain princes have become kings by the popular will of the people, and certainly our Lord Jesus Christ is such in his church. If it could be put to the vote, every believing heart in his church would crown him king. O that we would crown him more gloriously than we do! O that we would consider no expense to be wasted that would bring more glory to him. Suffering would be pleasure and loss would be gain if only his crown will shine brighter and it will make him more glorious in the eyes of men and angels. Yes, Jesus reigns! Long live the King! All hail to you, King Jesus! Go forth, you who love your Lord. Bow at his feet. Sprinkle his pathway with the lilies of your love and the roses of your gratitude. “Bring forth the royal diadem, and crown him Lord of all.”
Our Lord Jesus is also King in Zion by right of conquest. He has taken and carried by storm the hearts of his people and has killed their enemies who held them in cruel bondage. In the Red Sea of his own blood, our Redeemer has drowned the Pharaoh of our sins. He has delivered us from the iron chains and heavy curse of the law. The Liberator must be crowned! Who will take back from him what he has won in battle?
All hail, King Jesus! We gladly own your gentle rule! Reign in our hearts forever, O lovely Prince of Peace! [M&E]
