“Jesus Christ… who is at the right hand of God.”
—Romans 8:34
He who was once despised and rejected of men now occupies the honorable position of a loved and honored Son.
The right hand of God is the place of majesty and favor, and our Lord Jesus acts as the representative of his people. When he died for them, they had rest; when he rose up from the dead, they had liberty; when he sat down at his Father’s right hand, they were given favor, honor, and dignity. The raising and elevation of Christ is the elevation, acceptance, enshrinement, and glory of all his people. This sitting at the right hand of God is to be viewed as the acceptance of the One who guarantees our acceptance; just as the Representative was received by God, so too, in Christ, our souls are accepted by him.
O saint, see in this your secured freedom from condemnation. Who will condemn those who are in Jesus at the right hand of God?
The right hand of God is the place of ultimate power. Since Christ is at the right hand of God, all power has been given to him in heaven and in earth. Who will fight against the people who have such power vested in their Captain? O my soul, what can possibly destroy you, if your captain, who has all the power of heaven and earth at his disposal, is your helper? If the protection of the Almighty covers you, what sword can strike you? Rest secure in Christ. If Jesus is your all-prevailing King and has trampled your enemies beneath his feet— if sin, death, and hell are all vanquished by him and you are represented in him, there is no possibility that you can ever be destroyed.
“Jesus’ tremendous name puts all his enemies to flight:
Jesus, the meek, the angry Lamb, is like a Lion in the fight.
Hell’s armies we will withstand; Hell’s armies we overthrow;
Conquering them, through Jesus’ blood, gladly to conquer we go.”[M&E]
