“Tell the righteous that it shall be well with them.”
—Isaiah 3:10
It is always well with the righteous. If the passage had said, “It shall be well with the righteous in prosperity,” we would be thankful, for prosperity is a season of great danger and it would be a gift from heaven to have God’s protection from its snares. Or, if the text had said, “It will be well with him in persecution,” we would be thankful for such a sustaining assurance, for persecution is hard to bear. But no time is mentioned, and all time is included. God’s “shalls” must be understood always in their largest sense: from the beginning of the year to the end of the year, from evening until morning, in all conditions and under all circumstances it shall be well with the righteous.
It will be so well with him that we could not imagine it being any better. The righteous is well fed, since he feeds upon the flesh and blood of Jesus. He is well clothed, since he wears the imputed righteousness of Christ. He is well housed, since he dwells in God himself. He is well provided for, since the Lord is his Shepherd. He is well enriched, for heaven is his inheritance.
It is well with the righteous because our well-being is granted with divine authority. The mouth of God speaks the comforting assurance. If God declares that all is well but ten thousand demons declare it to be sick, we will laugh them all to scorn. Blessed be God for a faith which enables us to believe him when the creatures contradict him. His Word says, “It is well with you, O righteous one.”
If you are unable to see that, then let God’s word come to you and open your eyes. Believe it on divine authority more confidently than if your eyes and your feelings told it to you. Whoever God blesses is blessed indeed, and what his lips declare is the most sure and steadfast truth. [M&E]
