“The one I love is like a bundle of myrrh to me.”
—Song of Solomon 1:13
Myrrh may well be chosen to represent Jesus for several reasons; it may be because of its preciousness, its perfume, its pleasantness, its healing, preserving and disinfecting qualities, and its connection with sacrifice. But why is he compared to “a bundle of myrrh”?
First, it is because it communicates the idea of “plenty.” He is not a mere drop of it but, rather, a cistern full. He is not a sprig of it but a whole bundle. There is enough in Christ for all my needs.
He is compared to a “bundle” also because of great variety. There is in Christ not only the essentials, but in “him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily.” Everything we need is found in him. Look at the full character and work of Jesus, and you will see a marvelous variety– Prophet, Priest, King, Husband, Friend, Shepherd. Consider him in his life, death, resurrection, ascension, second advent; view him in his virtue, gentleness, courage, self-denial, love, faithfulness, truth, righteousness. Everywhere he is a bundle of preciousness.
And, lastly, Jesus is a “bundle of myrrh” because of his special grace. From before the foundation of the world, he was set apart for his people, and the aroma of his perfume is enjoyed by those who understand how to enter into communion with him by faith.
How blessed we are to be admitted into the secrets of his love and to be numbered among those for whom he sets himself apart. The choice and happy are made to say, “The One I love is a bundle of myrrh to me.” [M&E]
