“My heart is like wax that has melted within me.”
—Psalm 22:14
Our blessed Lord experienced a terrible sinking and melting of soul when he went to the cross. The worst calamity can be endured with a strong spirit, but, when the spirit is wounded, who can bear it? Deep depression of spirit is the most grievous of all trials, and our Savior had every reason to cry out to God, “Please, don’t turn away from me.”
Believer, come near the cross today, and humbly adore the King of glory. Certainly he has been brought far lower in mental distress and anguish than any of us; he is qualified to become a faithful High Priest who can sympathize with our feelings of weakness. Let’s not despair, since our Master has passed through this dark room before us. Instead, let’s steady ourselves with the sweet sympathy of our great High Priest, and our drops of sorrow will soon be forgotten in the ocean of his great suffering.
Come in, O strong and deep love of Jesus! Come like the sea at high tide; cover all my powers; drown all my sins; wash out all my cares; lift up my poor soul, and let it wash up on the shore of his love, like a poor broken shell having no virtue or value. But let him put his ear to me, and hear within my heart faint echoes of the vast waves of his own love which have brought me to his feet where it is my delight to be forever. [M&E]
