“Who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing.”
—Ephesians 1:3
All the goodness of the past, the present, and the future, Christ gives to His people. In the mysterious ages of the past the Lord Jesus was the Father’s first “Chosen One,” and in His choosing we have a great interest because we were chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world. Christ is the eternal Son, His Father’s only-begotten and well-loved Son. Then, we were graciously adopted and elevated to sonship because he gave us the authority to become “the sons of God.”
The eternal covenant we have with God is based on who Christ is and what he has done for us. In the everlasting wisdom of His predestining love and all-powerful decree, the eye of the Lord Jesus was always fixed on us, and we may rest assured that nothing can spoil his plans for His redeemed. The Prince of Glory has pledged to be our husband, and on that Great Day He will repeat his sacred vows for all the universe to hear.
The marvelous incarnation of the God of heaven, with all the amazing condescension and humiliation involved with it, is ours. The bloody sweat, the scourge, the cross, are ours forever. Whatever blessings result from His perfect obedience, finished atonement, resurrection, ascension, or intercession, are all ours by His own gift.
His rule over principalities and powers and His absolute majesty in heaven is also ours, because He uses it for the benefit of those who trust in Him. He who gave Himself for us in the depths of suffering and death takes nothing back from us now that He is enthroned in the highest heavens. [M&E]
