Morning & Evening Daily Devotional Reading– May 11

“I am with you always.”

—Matthew 28:20

It is good that there is Someone who remains the same and is always with us. It is good to know that there is one stable rock in the middle of life’s raging sea.

In light of this, O God, don’t let me set my affections on the rusting, moth-eaten, decaying treasures of this world, but let me set them upon You, the One who is ever faithful to me. I don’t want to build my house on the moving quicksand of a deceitful world, but on “the Rock” that stands immovably secure.

O, my soul, I charge you to lay up your treasure in the only secure vault there is; to store your jewels where you can never lose them. Put your all in Christ– all of your affections on His person, all of your hope in His merit, all of your trust in His blood, all of your joy in His presence—- to the point that you can laugh at loss and defy destruction.

Remember that all the flowers in the world’s garden fade away, and the day is coming when nothing will be left but the black, cold earth. Death’s black extinguisher must soon put out your candle. Oh! how sweet to trust in the One who will be your sunlight when the candle is gone!

In the middle of your worst affliction, tell your secrets to the Friend who sticks closer than a brother. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” He has promised, “I am with you always,” and this is enough for me to live on, no matter who may turn away from me. [M&E]
