Morning & Evening Daily Devotional Reading– June 23

by Charles H. Spurgeon, Revised and Edited by William C. Neff

“…a cake unturned.”

—Hosea 7:8

A cake that has not been turned over is uncooked on one side, and this describes the Lord’s people who have not been thoroughly touched by divine grace. They showed some partial obedience, but a lot of rebellion remained within their hearts. I wonder how much rebellion remains in me?

Let me ask you, dear believer, are you thorough in the things of God? Has grace gone through the very center of your being so as to be felt in all your actions, words, and thoughts? Although you will never be perfect in this life, it should be your constant aim to be set apart unto God’s holiness– spirit, soul, and body. Certainly, there must not be the appearance of holiness in one place and reigning sin in another or you too will be a cake on the fire unturned.

When a cake is not turned over it becomes burnt on the side nearest the fire. In the same way there are some who seem burnt black with bigoted zeal for certain parts of truth they have received while neglecting other necessary aspects of true godliness. The saint in public is sometimes a devil in private. He deals in flour by day and in soot by night. The cake which is burned on one side is like raw dough on the other.

Lord, if this is how I am, please do what you must to turn me! Turn my unholy nature to the fire of your love and let it feel the sacred glow of Your grace. [M&E]
