“You are more beautiful than the children of men.”
—Psalm 45:2
The entire person of Jesus is like a gem, and with his life he leaves us with one golden impression from God. He is altogether complete— not merely attractive at certain points, but gracious and all-glorious as a whole. His character is not a bunch of beautiful colors mixed together haphazardly or a heap of precious stones laid out carelessly on the table; but rather, He is the picture of beauty itself. In Him everything good fits together, and each aspect of his character beautifies the others. He is altogether lovely.
Oh, Jesus! Your power, Your grace, Your justice, Your tenderness, Your truth, Your majesty, and Your immutability make up such a man, or rather such a God-man, as neither heaven nor earth has seen elsewhere. Your infancy, your eternity, your sufferings, Your triumphs, your death, and Your immortality are all woven in one gorgeous tapestry without seam or tear. You are music without discord. As all the colors blend into one resplendent rainbow, so all the glories of heaven and earth meet in You, and unite so wondrously that there is no one like You anywhere. Even if all the virtues of the most excellent were bound in one bundle, they could not compete with You. You are the mirror of all perfection. You have been anointed with the holy oil of myrrh and cassia which your God has reserved for You alone; and as for Your fragrance, it is like a holy perfume that can be found nowhere else. Its fragrance is truly divine. [M&E]
