Morning & Evening Daily Devotional Reading– June 2
by Charles H. Spurgeon, Revised and Edited by William C. Neff
“The desires of the flesh fight against the spirit; and the spirit against the flesh.”
—Galatians 5:17
In every believer’s heart there is a constant struggle between the old nature and the new. The old nature is very active, and loses no opportunity to use its weapons against newborn grace. On the other hand, the new nature must always be on guard to resist and destroy its enemy. Grace working within us will use prayer, faith, hope, and love to cast out the evil. It puts on “the whole armor of God,” and wrestles earnestly. These two opposing natures will never cease to struggle so long as we are in this world.
The enemy is so securely entrenched within us that he can never be driven out while we are in this body, but one thing is sure— while the conflict continues, we have an Almighty helper, even Jesus, the Captain of our salvation, who is ever with us, and who assures us that we will prove to be more than conquerors through Him. With such assistance the new-born nature is more than a match for its enemies.
Are you fighting with the Adversary today? Are Satan, the world, and the flesh all against you? Don’t be discouraged or confused. Fight on! God will surround you with His protection, and He will heal your wounds. Don’t be afraid, for you will overcome; who can defeat the all-powerful Lord? As you fight, look to Jesus! The conflict may be long and stern, but the sweet victory will be yours, and the promised reward will be glorious. [M&E]
