Morning & Evening Daily Devotional Reading– July 21

“The daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head at you.”

—Isaiah 37:22

Reassured by the Word of the Lord, the poor trembling citizens of Zion grew bold and shook their heads at Sennacherib’s boastful threats. Strong faith enables the servants of God to look with calm contempt upon even their proudest foes. We know that our enemies are attempting impossibilities. They attempt to overthrow the city of God even when He has made it clear that the gates of hell will not prevail against it. They kick against the spikes, wounding themselves in the process.

We know the weakness of God’s enemies. What are they but men? And what is man but a worm? They roar and swell like waves of the sea, foaming in their own shame. But when the Lord arises to deal with them they will fly away like dust in the wind and be consumed by fire like crackling thorns. Their utter powerlessness to do damage to the cause of God and His truth causes even the weakest soldiers in Zion’s ranks to laugh them to scorn.

Above all we know that the Most High is with us. When He prepares Himself for battle, where are His enemies? If He gets out of his chair, the jars of clay will not contend very long with their Maker. His rod of iron will dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel, and their very remembrance will be wiped from the face of the earth.

Away, then, all fears; the kingdom is safe in the King’s hands. Let’s shout for joy for the Lord reigns. [M&E]
