Morning & Evening Daily Devotional Reading– July 1

by Charles H. Spurgeon, Revised and Edited by William C. Neff

“In summer and in winter it will be.”

—Zechariah 14:8

The streams of living water that flow from Jerusalem, the City of God, are not dried up by the parching heat of summer any more than they were frozen by the cold winds of blustering winter. So rejoice that you can testify to the faithfulness of the Lord. The seasons change, and you change; but your Lord remains the same, and the streams of His love are as deep, as broad, and as full as ever. The heats of business concerns and the scorching trials of life make me thirsty for a cool drink of His grace, and I can go there right now and drink my fill from that inexhaustible fountain. It is always there for me in good supply.

The prophet Elijah found the brook of Cherith all dried up, but Jehovah was still the same God of providence. Job said that his brothers were like deceitful brooks, but he found his God to be an overflowing river of consolation. The Nile is the great confidence of Egypt, but its floods are unpredictable and even dangerous; our Lord, however, is always the same.

By diverting the waters of the Euphrates King Cyrus took the city of Babylon, but no power of man or spirit can divert the current of divine grace. The tracks of ancient riverbeds are often found to be dry and desolate, but streams that have their source in the mountains of divine sovereignty and infinite love will always be full to the brim.

How happy I am to be led beside such still waters! Lord, don’t let me wander to other streams or desire to drink from muddy rivers. Let me drink fully from you. [M&E]
