“Without the shedding of blood, there is no way for our sins to be removed.”

—Hebrews 11:9

This is the voice of unalterable truth. In none of the Jewish ceremonies were sins, even typical sins, removed without blood-shedding. In no case, by no means, can sin be pardoned without atonement. It is clear, then, that there is no hope for me outside of Christ’s atoning death on the cross.

Since this is true, am I, then, actively believing in Jesus Christ? Is the blood of His atonement truly applied to my soul? Every human being needs Him desperately. We may think of ourselves as moral, generous, kind, or patriotic, but the rule will not be altered to make an exception for us. Our sins require nothing less than the potent blood of Jesus who alone satisfies God’s judicial requirements. What a blessing it is that there is a way to be pardoned– one way! Why should we attempt to seek another?

Those who merely comply with an outward form of religion are unable to understand how we can rejoice that all our sins are forgiven us for Christ’s sake. Their works, prayers, and ceremonies, do not give them much comfort; they remain uneasy because they are neglecting the one, great way of salvation and are trying to get rid of their sins without blood.

Take just a moment to behold the justice of God. Don’t you know that He is bound to punish sin; Now, see that punishment all executed upon your Lord Jesus Christ, and fall down in humble joy, kissing the dear feet of Him who died for you. It is impossible to comfort your conscience by looking at your feelings and behavior; that only leads to legal bondage. No! The only remedy for a guilty conscience is a sight of Jesus suffering on the cross in your behalf. [M&E]
