Morning & Evening Daily Devotional Reading– August 5
by Charles H. Spurgeon, Revised and Edited by William C. Neff
“We know that all things work together for good to those who love God.”
—Romans 8:28
There are some things about which the believer can be absolutely sure. He knows, for instance, that God sits at the controls even when the ship rocks the most. He believes that an invisible hand is always on the world’s rudder and that wherever providence may drift Jehovah steers it. That reassuring knowledge prepares him for everything. He looks over the raging waters and sees the spirit of Jesus walking on the waves, and he hears a voice saying, “It is I; don’t be afraid.”
He knows too that God is always wise, and knowing this he is confident that there can be no accidents, no mistakes– that nothing can occur that shouldn’t have happened. He can say, “Even if I lose all that I have, it is better that I should lose it than have it, if God so wills. The worst calamity is the wisest and the kindest thing that could happen to me if God ordains it.”
“We know that all things work together for good to those that love God.” To the Christian, this isn’t merely a theory but a matter of fact. Every event has worked out the most divinely blessed results, so the believer’s heart is assured that God governs everything wisely– even that He brings good out of evil. Knowing this he is enabled to calmly meet each trial as it comes. The believer can in the spirit of true resignation pray, “Send me what you will, my God, so long as it comes from You.” [M&E]
