Morning & Evening Daily Devotional Reading– August 12

“The Lord reigns; let the earth rejoice.”
—Psalm 97:1
There is never a reason for discontent if this blessed sentence is true. On earth the Lord’s power controls the raging of the wicked as much as the raging of the sea; His love as easily refreshes the poor with mercy as the earth with showers. In all of our conflicts and trials we may behold the hand of the divine King.
In hell evil spirits understand with great misery His undoubted supremacy. They roam about with a chain at their heel; the bit is in the mouth of the beast, and the hook in the jaws of sea monster. Death’s darts are under the Lord’s lock and key, and He is the Divine Warden of the grave’s prisons. The terrible vengeance of the Judge of all the earth makes demons cower and tremble, even as dogs in the kennel fear the hunter’s whip.
In heaven no one doubts the sovereignty of the King Eternal, but all fall on their faces to worship Him. Angels serve happily in His courts, and all the saints delight to serve Him day and night. May we soon reach the city of the great King! Until then…
“Though we live in this night of sadness
He will give us peace and gladness.
Let’s remember in our pains,
God over all things reigns.” [M&E]
